Benzodiazepine is a tranquilizing drug often prescribed to treat anxiety and sleep-related disorders. But, unfortunately, it is an addictive drug that can often lead to severe dependence and withdrawal syndromes. And, unfortunately, when it comes to addiction, women appear to be most at-risk. At Emerge Recovery TX understand that seeking treatment for a benzodiazepine addiction in Austin, TX, can be daunting. But, you don’t have to be on this journey alone. Benzodiazepine Addiction Treatment: What are Benzodiazepines?

Benzodiazepine, more commonly known as Benzo’s, is a class of drug that medical practitioners commonly prescribe. From a medical and therapeutic perspective, these drugs can have a wide range of uses, some of which may include relieving anxiety, preventing seizures, and alleviating symptoms of alcohol withdrawal.

So, how do ‘benzo’ drugs even work? In simple terms, it’s important to note that benzodiazepine is a class of drugs that works on the central nervous system. The drug acts directly on GABA receptors, thus resulting in an overall increase in endogenous neurotransmitters known as GABA.

This is important as GABA is responsible for eliciting a feeling of calmness and relaxation in its user. For these reasons, you’ll often see benzos referred to as anxiolytic and sedative-type drugs. Apart from increasing GABA, drugs classed under benzodiazepine can also increase dopamine. Remember, dopamine is the neurotransmitter often nicknamed the “pleasure chemical” it plays a significant role in stimulating addictive behavior.

Know the Signs of Benzo Dependency

Benzodiazepine addictions and dependencies are far too common amongst women. But, fortunately, the clinical signs of a benzo dependency can be easily identified by a licensed mental health or clinical physician. Some of the most common symptoms of benzodiazepine dependence may include:

  • A need to increase the amount consumed. And this could be due to a gradual tolerance build-up.
  • A strong compulsive desire to consume the drug without any need.
  • Feeling anxious and physical discomfort when a dose is missed.
  • Struggling to quit drug consumption or struggling to function normally without the medication.

When it comes to getting treatment for benzodiazepine addiction in Austin, the approach is dynamic and holistic. If you or a loved one is concerned about the harms of the benzodiazepine or a benzo addiction, speak to your doctor immediately.

Are Benzodiazepines Harmful to Women’s Health?

Unfortunately, due to its addictive nature, it can be quite easy to overdose on benzodiazepines. Symptoms of overdose can include:

  • Blurry vision
  • Extreme fatigue and lethargy
  • Slurred speech
  • Amnesia
  • Dyspnea (difficulty breathing).
  • Stupor
  • Coma
  • Death

It is important to note that benzodiazepines, i.e., Xanax and Valium, can enhance alcohol’s effects and toxicities, putting a person at high risk of alcohol toxicity.
